Gadar 2 Stumbles at Box Office as Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan Dominates Cinemas

When Gadar 2 hit the cinemas on August 11, it marked not only the reunion of the iconic duo Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel but also set a high bar at the box office. While initial earnings suggested a strong run, recent figures indicate that the film is losing momentum, particularly in contrast to Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film, Jawan.

According to verified box office reports, as of Day 36 since its release, Gadar 2 has managed to collect only Rs 7.28 crore during its fifth week, with Friday’s earnings standing at a modest Rs 45 lakh. The overall collection now stands at a commendable Rs 517.73 crore, yet pales in comparison to Jawan’s stellar Rs 400 crore in domestic earnings as of September 15, 2023.

Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh expressed his insights on the decline. “It’s a classic case of strong competition. Gadar 2 had a promising start but couldn’t sustain its momentum in the face of Jawan, which is a juggernaut at the box office,” he said in an interview dated September 15, 2023.

The trend of dwindling numbers for Gadar 2 started being noticeable soon after the release of Jawan. Shah Rukh Khan’s highly anticipated return to the silver screen became a nationwide craze, overshadowing other films in its wake. Within just a week of its release, Jawan crossed the Rs 350 crore mark, setting it up as an undeniable commercial success.

However, it’s not just Jawan that has impacted Gadar 2’s box office performance. A broader look suggests that the film has not been able to maintain its initial hype. “The storyline didn’t resonate as strongly with audiences as the producers might have hoped, and that, coupled with Jawan’s release, contributed to Gadar 2’s slowdown,” stated film critic Anupama Chopra in an article published on September 14, 2023.

The stark contrast in the box office performances of Gadar 2 and Jawan may indicate shifting audience preferences, especially as both films had extensive marketing campaigns. “Jawan offers a fresh storyline with a power-packed performance from Shah Rukh Khan. This seems to have stolen the limelight from Gadar 2,” observed Komal Nahta, a veteran film trade analyst, in a conversation dated September 16, 2023.
